Description

Fill your mug this season with this Dairy Free Peppermint Hot Chocolate! Creamy oat milk, rich dark chocolate, and the perfect hint of mint make this a cozy holiday favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups vanilla oat drink/milk (such as Chobani or other brand)
  • 1/41/3 cup chopped dairy-free dark chocolate (or chips), adjust amount for desired richness
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract (adjust to taste)

Optional Toppings:

  • Coconut whip (or other dairy-free whipped topping)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies

Instructions

  • Heat Milk and Chocolate: Combine the vanilla oat milk and the chopped dairy-free dark chocolate in a small saucepan. Place over low to medium-low heat.
  • Melt and Whisk: Heat gently, whisking constantly, until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and begins to simmer around the edges. Do not boil.
  • Add Peppermint: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the peppermint extract. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more if you desire a stronger mint flavor.
  • Serve: Divide the hot chocolate evenly into 2 mugs.
  • Garnish (Optional): Top with coconut whip and sprinkle with crushed candy canes, if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Oat Milk: Vanilla oat milk adds extra flavor, but plain unsweetened oat milk can also be used (you might want to add a touch of sweetener like maple syrup if using plain). Other dairy-free milks like almond or soy can be substituted.
  • Chocolate: Use a good quality dairy-free dark chocolate bar (chopped) or dairy-free chocolate chips. Adjust the amount based on how rich you like your hot chocolate.
  • Peppermint Extract: A little goes a long way! Start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more carefully, tasting as you go. Ensure you’re using peppermint extract, not mint extract, for the classic candy cane flavor.
  • Heating: Heat gently and whisk constantly to prevent the chocolate from scorching and ensure a smooth consistency. Do not bring to a rolling boil.
  • Variations: Add a pinch of salt to enhance the chocolate flavor, or a splash of vanilla extract if using plain oat milk.
