Description

This smoothie bowl is creamy smooth with a hint of vanilla, reminiscent of an orange creamsicle! It has a good amount of protein thanks to the Greek yogurt and tastes DELICIOUS!!! Perfect for a healthy breakfast or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Smoothie Bowl:

  • 1/2 cup Orange Juice, frozen into ice cubes (about 6 standard cubes)
  • 1 1/2 cups orange slices, peeled & frozen
  • 1 medium banana, frozen and chopped
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons white chia seeds* (optional)
  • 1/22/3 cup additional orange juice (or milk), for thinning

Optional Toppings:

  • Unsweetened shredded coconut
  • Hemp seeds
  • Granola
  • Fresh orange segments

Instructions

  • Freeze Fruit & Juice (Prep Ahead): The night before (or at least 6 hours ahead), pour 1/2 cup orange juice into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid. Peel and slice the oranges. Peel, chop, and slice the banana. Spread the orange slices and banana pieces in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. (Freezing flat prevents fruit from sticking together in one large clump).
  • Combine Ingredients: Place the frozen orange juice cubes, frozen orange slices, frozen banana chunks, Greek yogurt, vanilla extract, and white chia seeds (if using) into a high-speed blender.
  • Blend: Secure the lid and start blending on low speed, gradually increasing to high. Use the blender’s tamper tool (if available) or stop occasionally to scrape down the sides and push ingredients toward the blades. Blend until thick and smooth like soft-serve ice cream.
  • Adjust Consistency: Add the additional orange juice (starting with 1/2 cup) slowly while blending, only adding enough to reach your desired thick, smooth consistency without making it too thin to eat with a spoon.
  • Serve: Pour the smoothie mixture immediately into two bowls. Add your favorite toppings, such as shredded coconut and hemp seeds. Enjoy right away!

Notes

  • Freezing: Using frozen orange juice cubes, frozen oranges, and frozen banana is essential for a thick, creamy smoothie bowl texture without needing extra ice which can dilute flavor.
  • Greek Yogurt: Provides protein and creaminess. Use plain (adjust sweetness if needed) or vanilla.
  • Chia Seeds (Optional): Adds extra fiber and nutrients, and helps thicken the smoothie slightly.
  • Blender: A high-speed blender works best for smoothly blending frozen ingredients. You may need to use the tamper or stop and stir.
  • Consistency: Adjust the amount of added liquid carefully to achieve a thick, spoonable consistency, not a drinkable smoothie.
  • Storage: Smoothie bowls are best enjoyed immediately.
